How It Works
The PCS Employment Services Program follows a structured process that helps students with I/DD move from learning basic skills to applying them in real settings. Each step builds on the last, with clear expectations and consistent support.
It Starts with You
The Employment Services Program begins with a Job Smart Workshop. This is used to understand how each student learns, what types of tasks feel comfortable, and what kind of support may be needed. The goal is to create a clear starting point and a plan that feels realistic, not overwhelming. That plan then guides training as PCS staff:
- create a personalized plan based on strengths and interests
- identify specific skill areas to build first
- choose tasks that match current ability level
- set goals that can grow as confidence and skills develop
Learning That Fits Your Style
Training is built around hands-on learning in small groups. Students work through tasks at a manageable pace, with clear expectations and support available when needed. This structure helps reduce confusion and gives students time to understand each step before moving on.
During the PCS employment training, students will:
- follow step-by-step instructions to complete tasks
- rotate through different types of activities
- practice tasks in both program and community settings
- repeat tasks to build familiarity and confidence
What You’ll Learn
Employment support services for adults with I/DD focuses on both job tasks and workplace behavior. These skills are developed together so students can apply what they learn in real environments.
Hard Skills – Hands-On Job Tasks
Students practice tasks that reflect common job responsibilities. Each task is broken into clear steps and repeated so it becomes easier to complete independently.
Students may spend time:
- setting up and organizing materials for events such as tables, chairs, and supplies
- completing basic lawn and outdoor work such as cleanup and maintenance
- cleaning shared spaces using simple checklists and routines
- organizing materials and completing step-by-step tasks
Social Skills – Workplace Success
Workplace success depends on understanding expectations and interacting with others. These skills are built through everyday practice in the program and in community settings, with students:
- following directions from supervisors or staff
- asking questions when instructions are unclear
- working alongside others and sharing responsibilities
- staying on task and completing assigned work
Job Coaching – Support When You Need It
Job coaching gives adults with I/DD direct, one-on-one support while they are learning new tasks. Coaches stay involved during activities so students can ask questions, get help in the moment, and understand what is expected. Coaches work alongside students by:
- demonstrating how to complete a task before asking students to try it
- giving guidance during tasks when something is unclear
- pointing out what is working well and what can be improved
- stepping back as students become more confident and independent
